The scoop

This is Toyota's 2011 updated Kluger we're talking about which, apart from exterior changes, is the same as its predecessor. The new design is smarter, shinier and sleeker in the front and rear.

Despite its stylish revamp, the Kluger actually sees an $800 reduction, making the entry level price a welcoming $42,690. Front-wheel drive is standard but you can opt for 4WD for an extra $4500.

The drive

Standard features new to the 2011 Kluger include Bluetooth hands-free and music streaming, steering wheel controls, an iPod-compatible USB port, 6 speakers, 7 airbags, reverse camera and a full-size spare tyre.

The 3.5L V6 engine is powerful but the heaviness of the car can sometimes negate this - at modest speeds, the Kluger feels dependable but this wanes slightly as you put pedal to the metal. Having said that, it's quite responsive and numerous driver aids, such as Toyota's Vehicle Control Management System (VCMS) and Driver Assist Technology (DAT), are a good help. Don't let the Kluger's heftiness scare you - you can move around easily and see everything you need to see when parking.

The 2011 Kluger sure is luxurious on the inside with leather, chrome and wood trims to boot. And did I mention there's a rear seat DVD player?

The second row seats conveniently slide to increase load capacity and the centre seat can be removed, providing the window seats with inner armrests. Comfy!

Safety

The 2011 Kluger has been awarded a five-star safety rating by ANCAP. Toyota claims it provides the most safety features in the mid-size SUV segment with ABS anti-lock brakes with Electronic Brakeforce Distribution and Brake Assist, Vehicle Stability Control with steering assist, Traction Control and Hill-Start Assist Control.

Green factor

It's a bulky people mover so don't expect much here.
