Take one look at the Ford Focus XR5 and you’d immediately think she’s something to write home about. Her vibrant metallic orange exterior is like the colour of rich caramel and she’s the type of pretty-young-thing who would immediately steal the limelight if she walked into a crowded room. The XR5 has been around since 2006 and for all the goodies she hides under the bonnet as well as her pretty disposition, the XR5 is definitely an affordable option for those wanting a ‘hot hatch’.

The engine is a turbo-charged 5 cylinder, which has some personality and willingness. To accompany the engine, a six speed manual is the only transmission. In a car like this, automatic would be primitive and pointless. With a brawny clutch to match the gearbox, the XR5 is easy to handle and can certainly hold her own. This is the type of car you drive hard.

Beyond the caramel exterior and turbo engine, the XR5 is little bit ‘blah’ inside. The interiors are typical Focus – grey as a rainy day with an unexciting layout. The standard interior equipment ticks all the boxes – audio, electrics, spacious and comfortable seats, airconditioning and leather-clad steering. The biggest mark against the XR5 is the lack of cruise control which could be the nail in the coffin if you need a vehicle for ample highway driving.

DESCRIBE THIS CAR IN 3 WORDS
Pretty, Performing, Affordable

WHAT ARE THE BEST THINGS ABOUT THIS CAR
She is a hot hatch with the bonus of an excellent engine and easy handling

WHAT ARE THE DOWNSIDES OF THIS CAR
No cruise control, tsk tsk. And if interior aesthetics are important to you, the grey might make you miserable. If you can’t drive a manual, you’ll have to rule this one out.

WHAT KIND OF PETROL DOES IT USE?
2.5 Litre 5 cylinder turbo petrol engine

LIKED IT?
I think I could forego cruise control if it means having a car of this colour and engine quality parked in my garage
