Sexy and sleek - the BMW 640i
The scoop
The BMW 640i – one of the two variants of BMW’s 6 Series Convertible – could be described as the cheapest expensive car. At $195,000, the 640i is the only model in the open-top high-performance segment under $200K. Bargain!
Style & drive
This convertible knows it’s a convertible – BMW have thought of everything - the leather upholstery is even heat-reflecting so your seats don’t fire up when you’ve got your top down.
Goodbye canvas, hello… denim? BMW has eschewed the stock-standard black canvas that usually adorns drop tops and has gone for a new textured material that seems to have been inspired by your favourite pair of skinnies.
Exclusive to BMW is the ConnectedDrive system – connected to the central dashboard’s full colour, head-up display – that shows your emails via Bluetooth and the internet.
A combination of BMW technologies known as ‘EfficientDynamics’ offers power without compromising fuel efficiency.
The full list of lavish features is almost endless: 19-inch V-Spoke alloys, adaptive headlights, comfort access, lumbar support, seat heating, Professional Navigation, rear-view camera, front and rear Park Distance Control, sports seats, high-beam assist, BiXenon headlights, cruise control with brake function, LED fog lights, USB, alarm system, ambient light, Dakota leather upholstery and hi-fi loudspeaker system. Phew!
The drive is faultless – all road bumps are absorbed and almost flown over. It’s everything you would expect – and more.
Safety
ANCAP hasn’t crash-tested the BMW 6 Series Convertible but safety comes in the form of front airbags, seat frame-mounted side airbags and three-point seatbelts.
Eco
It scored 4 / 5 eco-friendly stars from the Government’s Green Vehicle Guide (www.greenvehicleguide.gov.au) and drinks 7.9 litres of fuel per 100km.
