The two necessary elements of a weekend road trip are yummy snacks and good tunes. Yummy snacks are a no-brainer (Snakes Alive and Minties win hands down) but when it comes to taste in music, everybody wants to be the DJ. So to save any arguing from the backseat, we’ve rustled up the latest music releases for you to spin while you’re on the road.
Whether you love her, hate her or don’t know who ‘her’ is, Lana Del Rey seems to be the name on everybody’s lips (and quite a pair of lips she has too. Yes, those puckers are apparently real). Even though she bombed with her appearance on Saturday Night Live, her debut album, Born To Die seems to be ensuring she gets more than just the average 15-minutes of fame.

Even if you don’t own a pair of cowboy boots and you only don a Stetson when you’re wearing fancy dress, you can’t help but love The McClymonts. They’re the Dixie Chicks from Down Under and they’re proof in the pudding that girls can play their instruments and look damn fine doing it. Their new song, How Long Have You Known makes us want to kick up our heels as we wait for the June release of their third album, Two Worlds Collide.
If you’ve got a man in your motor car, you may have to give in to the juggernaut that is the new Van Halen album, A Different Kind of Truth. Van Halen is keeping it in the family with the new addition of Eddie’s 20 year old son, Wolfgang Van Halen. Fans will be more than satisfied with the new album from the rock ‘n roll royals. And okay, you might catch yourself tapping your toes from the passenger seat.
But the album sure to satisfy everybody’s DJ complex is Triple J’s Hottest 100 V19 for 2011. A little bit of Lana Del Rey, Matt Corby, Hilltop Hoods, Kimbra and of course, Gotye, this CD package is packed with 42 of your favourite tunes from 2011.
And now, what to play first...
