Unless you’re Clover Moore, one would think cars and bikes don’t mix.

Not so, says Honda, who will continue its support of Commonwealth Games gold medalist and Elite Road Cyclist of the Year 2010 Rochelle Gilmore.

Honda Australia’s Senior Director, Lindsay Smalley, congratulated Gilmore on her outstanding sporting achievements to date and said he was delighted Honda could contribute to her ultimate goal of reaching the London Olympics in 2012.

“Rochelle Gilmore is a true Aussie role model and an inspiration to female cyclists around the country. Honda Australia is incredibly proud to announce its continuing support for Rochelle as she strives for top honours in women’s cycling," he said.

Honda is well-known within the cycling community through its promotion of road safety messages with the Amy Gillett Foundation, support of the Honda Hybrid Women’s Tour in 2009 and the Honda Insight Woman’s International Grand Prix Series in 2010.

The professional women’s team, aka the Honda Dream Team, has also been extremely prominent on the Australian circuit in recent years and while Honda has been delighted with the team’s success, it will now focus on assisting Gilmore to reach her ultimate personal goal of winning Olympic gold.

“Cycling is a great fit with Honda’s core values of sustainability and road safety. Our support for Rochelle satisfies our thirst for competition at the highest level,” explained Smalley.

Despite suffering a fractured pelvis during a pileup in the Tour of Italy last month, Gilmore insists she will be fit for September’s world road cycling championships in Copenhagen, a major milestone on the way to her Olympic dream.

“Honda’s support has helped me reach many goals in the past and I am thrilled to have their support as I strive for London,” said Gilmore.

“I have done everything in my power to recover from this injury. I am focused on Denmark in September and nothing will stand in my way.”
