Volvo Gets Even Safer

Safe in the City with the Volvo XC60

Volvo has always been synonymous with safety and now, combined with cutting-edge technology, the Swedish manufacturer is set to sideline a range of rear-end impacts with a new safety system aptly named City Safety.

With 75 per cent of all car crashes arising from distracted drivers simply failing to brake, the system is designed to avoid low-speed fender benders in traffic. Given the driver is doing under 15km/h, the system automatically detects imminent impact with the help of inbuilt laser sensors and will brake automatically to avoid a collision. If the speed between the two vehicles is between 15 km/h and 30 km/h, the City Safety system will help to reduce the severity of the impact and there is even technology in developement to literally swerve the car on the drivers behalf! At higher speeds, the driver is alerted about potential accidents via an advanced audio-visual warning system.

The good news for safety-savvy car buyers is that City Safety will be standard on Volvo's new XC60, along with other optional new safety innovations available including Driver Alert Control (which reduces the risk of having a micro-sleep), blind-spot traffic detection and an inbuilt sat-nav system to keep you on track. With style and safety assured, it's safe to say the XC60 ticks all the boxes (no pun intended) for those after a smart, functional and great-looking urban SUV.

The XC60 will be launched in Australia early in 2009. Final pricing and specs TBC.
