Review of Black Mass

Perhaps it’s the fact that his performance bounces beautifully against uber-talented Aussie actor, Joel Edgerton, or that he simply shines in the archetypal gangster role, but Black Mass is the film that will put Johnny Depp back in the limelight and potentially garner him a few statues during 2016’s award season.

While his track record of late has been somewhat lame (Into the Woods, The Tourist, Mortdecai or the Rum Diary, anyone?), he’s more than redeemed himself with his portrayal of Irish mobster, James Whitey.

Set amongst the backdrop of 1970s Boston, this film is text book gangster, with a solid, true plot that at times is as trademark violent and gruesome, as it is slow moving.

Edgerton plays FBI Agent John Connolly, who persuades his childhood friend, Bulger to collaborate with the Bureau and eliminate a common enemy: the Italian mob.

The unlikely alliance eventually and predictably spirals out of control, allowing Whitey to evade law enforcement, consolidate power, kill a bunch of people and become one of the most ruthless and powerful gangsters in Boston, or indeed American, history.

Complicating matters for Connolly is the fact that Whitey’s brother Bill, played brilliantly by Benedict Cumberbatch, remains a powerful leader in the Massachusetts Senate.

Depp holds the film together for the most part, but Edgerton stands out as a superb talent who is sure to make a huge impact in Hollywood after this stellar performance.

Fifty Shades of Grey's Dakota Johnson is pleasantly solid in this one (not even in the slightly way irritating) in her role as Whitey's wife, while Jessie Plemons joins a stellar supporting cast, which includes Kevin Bacon, Peter Sarsgaard and Julianne Nicholson, all whose acting chops are infinitely better than the overcooked script.

Well done? If you like your movies mafia, brutal, slow and predictable, it's in the bag.

The paper JUKE

Nissan Creates Origami Car

Forget a cake. To celebrate the Nissan JUKE's fifth anniversary Nissan and a British paper artist have thought well outside of the cardboard box in collaborating on a unique project to create a full-scale Origami JUKE.

In a nod to Nissan’s Japanese heritage and inspired by the very first steps of car design – getting ideas onto paper – artist Owen Gildersleeve hand built the intricate replica model from paper to the exact dimensions of the current Nissan JUKE.

Owen took more than 200 hours and folded more than 2,000 pieces of paper to create the detailed sculpture.

The Origami JUKE features the same bold design cues – such as th wheel fenders, lights and grille – that give the real-life model it distinctive character.

Owen said: “This was a great project to work on  - hard work but very rewarding. As a celebration piece it draws on so many influences, such as the origami focus inspired by Nissan’s Japanese roots.

The Hyundai i30 Accent
car reviews - cars for mum

Hyundai i30 Accent

The Hyundai i30 was the fourth largest selling car in Australia in 2014 and the 2015 model looks set to repeat that performance, or even beat it.

AutoChic tested the i30 Accent and we were pretty darn happy with it. It’s got all the new small car details you’d expect, including a 1.8 litre petrol engine, six speed auto, five inch touch screen with reversing camera and a five year unlimited kilometre warranty.

While function is important in every car, it’s the style that really draws us in, and this baby didn’t disappoint. There’s sleek new European Styling, which gives it a totally luxurious and glamorous feel and its silhouette is sleek and sporty, so it’s a dream to step in and out of.

Performance and Handling Never before has the adjective, “smooth” been so appropriate. The engine revs easily and seems quite powerful, performing beautifully in the city as well as on the open road. We really put it through its paces on some windy National Park roads and it proved to have precise and responsive steering and really effective brakes, which performed perfectly in all conditions.

Wise up before you buy your next new car

Buying a New Car?

Have you ever felt that you’re not taken seriously when you step into a car yard? Yep, me too. In fact, the first time I was able to buy a real, brand spanking new car, I was almost bullied into buying a second hand car that I found completely uncomfortable and ugly, denied the test drive of the car I wanted to buy and ended up buying a demo model car at full retail price. Don’t get me wrong, I love my car and 15 years on, it runs as steadily as the day I drove it home, but my memories of being treated badly, and duped into paying retail for what is essentially a second hand car, remain fresh in my mind.

If only I had known David Lye, founder of Private Fleet, who acts as a middle man between you and the dealership, helping you to find the right car at the right price.

“Women do feel that they’re not taken seriously when going into a car yard,” laments David. “It is a very blokey environment and women can often feel intimidated and pressured.”
